Tell us about your company and what makes you unique
[NH] At AVTech Specialists Inc., we stand apart by doing things differently. Our roots in IT expertise give us a distinct edge, allowing us to approach residential installations with a commercial-grade mindset. Unlike companies that view home setups as straightforward projects, we bring the precision and quality typically reserved for business environments to every installation. This philosophy has been central to our success, enabling us to deliver superior, reliable systems that exceed client expectations.
What truly sets us apart is our forward-thinking approach to technology. From pioneering Cat6 cabling in 2009, well before it became standard, to embracing emerging streaming technologies ahead of the curve, we have consistently stayed ahead of industry trends. While others relied on outdated control systems that were costly and difficult to maintain, we focused on innovation. This strategy proved invaluable, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic when our expertise in streaming solutions helped us and our clients navigate unprecedented challenges. As competitors struggle to keep pace with evolving technology, AVTech continues to thrive by offering cutting-edge, durable, and innovative solutions tailored to modern needs.
How did you get started in the industry?
[NH] A pivotal and amusing moment in AVTech’s journey began with an unexpected call one evening around 7 PM. A physician from South Bend Orthopaedics reached out, explaining that his daughter had managed to jam six or seven discs into his $1,000 Blu-ray player. Although I couldn’t repair the player, our conversation quickly shifted to his home theater system. He asked me: “Why are there scrolling purple lines on the theater screen when we watch anything?” and “Why does the TV in the Great Room make strange noises at high volumes?” His concerns ranged from technical glitches to doubts about his $125-150K investment in the system.
At the time, my professional focus was IT, but I’d always had passion for audio/video technology. The situation brought me back to the early ’90s when I first set up my parents’ Pioneer Dolby Pro Logic system for movies like 007: GoldenEye. With no formal training—just a manual and a lot of trial and error—I developed a deep curiosity for AV systems. Years later, that same curiosity, paired with my problem-solving skills honed through a successful IT career, would lead me into the AV industry. That single call, seemingly random at the time, sparked a journey that shaped AVTech’s future. It’s proof that the smallest moments can often leave the biggest mark.
What is your favorite part of a project?
[NH] I’ve always thrived on the immediate gratification that comes from transforming a challenging installation into a seamless, polished solution. There’s something uniquely rewarding about taking a space that’s cluttered, incomplete, or underperforming and turning it into something functional, impressive, and tailored to the client’s needs. It’s not just about the technology—it’s about showing clients what’s possible and setting a new standard for what they should expect from an AV/IT installation.
For me and the entire AVTech team, the true reward lies in our clients’ reactions. Seeing their faces light up when they experience their upgraded system—realizing how it enhances their daily lives—is the ultimate fulfillment. That moment when they express genuine joy and gratitude reminds us why we’re so passionate about what we do. It’s not just about completing a project; it’s about making a meaningful impact, and that instant gratification fuels our drive to keep delivering exceptional results every day.
What is the most challenging part of a project?
[NH] One of the biggest challenges in any project—especially in the technology field—is assembling the right team. Too often, companies prioritize filling roles quickly over finding the right fit. But when it comes to complex technologies like AV/IT systems, success demands more than just extra hands. It requires a deep understanding, strong problem-solving skills, and the ability to collaborate effectively under pressure.
Over the past few years, finding highly skilled, reliable professionals who can deliver top-tier service has been one of the most difficult parts of our work. Despite the high demand and a limited talent pool, I’m proud to say that the team we’ve built at AVTech is nothing short of exceptional. Their technical expertise is matched by their professionalism and customer-first attitude. Clients frequently praise not only the quality of our installations but also the courtesy and dedication of our team, who consistently go above and beyond to meet their needs.
What is your most frequently used tool during the installation process?
[NH] One of our most essential tools is a label maker. Properly labeling wiring is key to maintaining organized installations and ensuring efficient future service and troubleshooting. Clear labels save time, prevent errors, and streamline system management. This focus on detail extends to our documentation, which we keep clear, accurate, and accessible for both our team and clients.
Another game-changer has been our service backpacks. Introduced by a new hire two years ago, they’ve revolutionized our workflow by keeping tools organized and easily accessible, allowing us to tackle any on-site task efficiently. Finally, no job is complete without a thorough cleanup. A good vacuum ensures we leave every installation not just functional but also spotless, reflecting the care and professionalism we put into every project. A clean, tidy space is just as important as the technology itself in delivering an exceptional client experience.
What are your go-to songs for system testing?
[NH]
- “Hotel California” (Eagles – 1999 live version)
- “Satisfaction” (Benny Benassi)
- “Torn” (Natalie Imbruglia)
- “Ecstasy” (ATB)
How has your experience been working with lea?
[NH] On the rare occasion we’ve needed support with an LEA product, their local team exceeded all expectations. They quickly provided a replacement unit, assisted with reprogramming, and ensured our client was back up and running in time for dinner service—all within a few hours. LEA’s dedication to service mirrors our own commitment to client satisfaction. Like us, they’ve built on the successes of their combined experience, continuously improving to deliver exceptional products and service. It’s this shared drive for excellence that makes working with LEA so rewarding for both our team and our clients.
