Scene Breakdown

Mad Max Fury Road

Home Theater Audio Systems: Best Movie Scenes For System Testing

This movie was recommended to us by reddit user, u/lamel66 in the subreddit group r/hometheater. After watching the movie for ourselves, we can definitely see why…

The roaring engines will put your subs to the test as the explosions and wind storms come at you from your main channels. Then, the exhilarating battles through the desert wasteland push an awesome audio scene that will showcase that range or your systems. This whole movie is a feast for your client’s theater setup and there is not any scene that is bad for testing.

Blade Runner:2049

This one came to us from reddit user u/GlobeAround. They make a very important point, which is to test your subs for excessive room rattle. And after playing through this film, you’ll understand why…

Right off the bat during the fight scene, this movie puts your subwoofers to the test as punches are being thrown, people are being tossed through walls, etc. With Blade Runner being mostly shot in the rain it will give your system a sense of verticality and really showcase your overhead channels to provide you with an immersive experience.

This one was recommended by reddit user u/thx1138jr who pointed out several films included on the dolby atmos test disc. And if dolby recommends it, it must be pretty good.

The buzzing of the bomber’s individual rotor blades of their propellers and humming of the squadron zipping by is a great chance to showcase well-tuned overhead channels. Then the real action starts in the chaos of the dog fight scene as fighter jets spiral in and out of the air followed by an onslaught of gunfire. This scene does a great job of making you feel as if you’re right in the middle of the action. It’s the perfect chance to show your clients how a well-tuned system can enhance the viewing experience.

Saving private ryan

Reddit user u/movie50music50 recommends this film for a great rear channel experience.

The Omaha beach scene may be the most iconic war scenes of all time and the audio during this sequence is incredible. This is where those rear channels come into play. You will hear bullets flying past soldiers, mortars and landmines exploding on the beach, and the frantic orders being barked out throughout the chaos. This makes for an amazing display of detail that will surely impress your clients.

The Live Aid performance puts the gives you the best seat in the house for one of the most iconic live concerts ever. You’ll experience a vast array of sounds as the camera moves around the stage from instrument to instrument. It will start from your main channel where it hones in on  Freddy Mercury playing the piano and then quickly shifts to your side and rear channels so you can hear the crowd which, if you listen closely enough you can even hear the roars from the nosebleeds. It’s a great opportunity to hear the versatility of a great sound system.

Spectre

Bond, James Bond. Action is a given when you hear that name. Shoutout to Reddit user u/CUCompE on giving us a very detailed description of the opening scene of Spectre. The Drums and music in this scene show off the dynamic of your system, while the crowd of Dia de Los Muertos gives a lot of audio detail. From the indistinct chatter to the helicopter and fight scene, you’ll be thrown into an immersive surround experience where audio is coming from everywhere. But lastly, the building collapse is what tops everything off with bone-rattling sub to bring it all together.

baby driver

The scene starts off with a ringing sound that should help you zero in on some piercing overtones in the 5kHz to 10kHz range. Then bam! Bellbottoms by John Spencer Blues Explosion takes over the entirety of the scene to create an upbeat, yet serious track that displays an awesome electric guitar to get your system rockin’. From that, the getaway begins and integrates the song with the real-life aspects of driving such as the high frequency of the tires screeching, the slamming of the brakes, and even the sound of shifting gears. all of the sounds complement each other to showcase the full range of the frequency spectrum.

Pacific rim

This recommendation came from reddit user u/pyro_maniac88.

Massive mechanical beasts bring your systems to life with an array of unique sounds and creaks that will highlight the versatility of your main channels. And naturally, with robots of this magnitude, huge battles packed with audio treats are right around the corner. This is always a great time to show off what your subs are capable of.

Spider-man: Homecoming

Home Theater Audio Systems: Best Movie Scenes For System Testing

Spider man’s first encounter with the Vulture in this movie is a great scene to test your home cinema system. For starters, the sound effects of the web-slinging in this scene bring a sense of distance and space between your surround speakers. Next, comes the fighting where punches are being thrown left and right, Vulture’s crew is being tossed off the Ferry, and bullets fly in the air as Vulture is trying to escape. Classic battle scenes with all of the audio goodies that come with it. Through all of the chaos, there is no test better than when  Vulture splits the ferry in two and your subwoofer wakes up with a huge roar to account for the genuine scale of the size of the Ferry itself. When the music starts to fade this will display a great sense of dynamics and detail which will round off your system testing and provide your client with a great setup.

thor ragnarok

You could argue that any Marvel movie would be great to test your home audio system. But we’re partial to this one when it comes to system testing. When Thor summons the thunder your overheads Rumble and give your client an immersive audio experience. If they are looking to test out their subs the scene where Thor and Hulk are battling in the arena is going to be great. Lastly, the final battle scene is a feast for your client’s system. Starting with the lightning bolt striking coming from your rear channels and the transition into the sweet sound of the electric guitar intro on ‘Immigrant Song’ by led Zeppelin. As the scene progresses listen closely for the bass and drums that start to enter.

FORd vs ferrARI

Home Theater Audio Systems: Best Movie Scenes For System Testing

You cannot make a movie about the epic battle between Ford and Ferrari at the 24-hour race at Le Mans without having iconic race scenes packed with furious audio. For a more unique audio experience then definitely go to the first race at Willow springs and listen closely. A well-tuned system will put your clients right behind the wheel. They’ll experience all of the rattlings from the broken windshield, the distinct sound of changing gears, and the high frequency of the tire screeching at every single turn. Pay close attention to the 3 or 4 seconds where all audio drowns out and dials in on the driver breathing, it gives your system a lot of dynamic and detail.

interstellar

Home Theater Audio Systems: Best Movie Scenes For System Testing
This scene develops fairly slow but the sound of the engine diving into the wormhole blasts off of your main channels and the anticipation of the impending drama delivers a great home cinema experience. Leading up to entering the wormhole is when your bass takes over and wakes up your subwoofer for all of the action about to take place. Once you are through the black hole listen very carefully and you will hear the low frequency of ominous organ notes giving away the slightest of details as the crew is experiencing utter chaos.

We had a lot of fun reading through the recommendations on Reddit. But it’s even more fun to fire up your favorite movie and hear your home theater audio systems bring these stories to life. Sharing that experience with your clients is always a great time.
