AV Integrator: Westbury National Spotlight
Westbury National is a seriously well-recognized leader in AV solutions throughout Canada and North America. From planning and executing custom AV systems for events and shows to providing AV solutions for large and complex advanced-technology installations, Westbury National has a 45-year reputation for delivering high-quality results.
We sat down with Tim Bootes, Programming Manager for Westbury National to chat about installs, challenges of the job, and more…
Tell me about your career?
[TB] I’m Tim Bootes, the Programming Manager for Westbury National. I worked at Westbury 25 years ago for about five years, and then came back 15 years ago. Westbury is one of Canada’s largest professional audio-visual integration and full-service event production companies, and I initially worked in the lighting department in the touring industry. I decided to get away from touring and jumped into programming. I primarily look after integration.
What has been your most challenging project?
[TB] The CN Tower was definitely a challenging project but also one of the most fulfilling. Most projects are unique and challenging in their own ways. Our recent work with the Canada Goose flagship store at the Sherway Gardens Mall in Toronto was certainly very unique. The multi-room, multi-system experience we helped create there is pretty amazing.
What is the most challenging part of your job?
[TB] Managing timelines is the most challenging part, I think. Some projects are very complicated, and we are given a limited timeline. Often our turnaround time is just a few months rather than a year out. It takes a lot of work and planning to manage large projects, but we always come through. Westbury has a lot of talent and experience, and we have great technology partners.
How do you know the job is a success?
[TB] Customer feedback is definitely important. We want to do everything we can to make sure we aren’t getting a ton of calls. If the client is reporting problems, then that is the major issue for us. The ultimate goal is to get repeat business and so when the client picks up the phone to get our help on a new project, that is always a great sign!
What advice would you give to programmers?
[TB] I’d advise programmers to keep detailed notes and document everything. Listen to the client, and keep detailed info on what they need to accomplish. These systems can get complicated and no one can keep all the specifics in their head — especially when working multiple projects.
And if the client has an idea for trying something unique (and it is within budget), give it a try… the engagement will help make a happy return customer, and you will add something new to your capabilities. Unique ideas can come from anywhere.
What is your go-to song or songs for system tests?
[TB] I don’t have one!
We’d like to thank Tim Bootes and Westbury National for taking the time to speak with us and also for working with our CONNECTSERIES amplifiers in their recent Canada Goose retail store project.
