Limiter Calculator: Calculate Safe Speaker Limiter Settings
Limiters are a critical safeguard to include in any professional audio amplifier’s DSP. They allow you to set level threshold values, which ensure that the signal level cannot exceed a specific range. This helps protect the speakers from being overpowered which could potentially damage the equipment resulting in costly repairs or replacements.
Loudspeaker manufacturers typically provide you with the threshold settings and sometimes attack and release times, that you need to properly set up your amplifier’s limiters. You should always adhere to settings provided by your loudspeaker manufacturer to provide the best protection to your speakers and avoid any damage.
Not all loudspeaker manufacturers provide complete or partial limiter settings. In this case, we have created a simple guide to help you determine limiter values for your loudspeakers. It is important to note that this is only a general guide and does not guarantee loudspeakers will not get damaged.
Here is what you need to know to calculate your loudspeaker limiter settings:
FOR LOW-Z LOUDSPEAKERS

RMS Power Rating, Minimum Impedance or Nominal Impedance if minimum isn’t given, High Pass Filter, and Loudspeaker Type can be found in the loudspeaker manufacturer’s specification documentation.

Loudspeaker Tap Setting:
Multiple tap settings are usually available on a constant voltage speaker. Look at the power tap setting being used on each loudspeaker.
Loudspeaker Transformer Voltage:
Most constant voltage loudspeakers can run at different voltages. Check which voltages are available in the loudspeaker’s specification documentation and use a voltage that is being used on the relevant amplifier channel.
High Pass Filter and Loudspeaker Type can be found in the loudspeaker manufacturer’s specification documentation.
